Once referred to as "The West Coast of New England" in a 1980s tourism marketing campaign, Burlington, Vermont, is the centerpiece of the two-state Champlain Valley region. For the past four decades, the historic Church Street Marketplace has been the core of Burlington's downtown district with dozens of locally-owned shops, cafes and restaurants. In the early 2000s, the waterfront area was revitalized with the construction of the ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center.
